Blackouts, 2023
Python scripts, 7.5"EPDs
We are in the age of automated imaging, where data-driven images saturate our world, creating a demand for data storage, processing, and transmission. Data centers, integral but resource-intensive, consume extensive energy and water. Blackouts spotlight the hidden issue of planetary resource depletion amid the surge of images and data in the digital era. Machine-generated Anthropocenic images are re-encoded into ASCII characters, displayed on electrophoretic displays(EPDs) permanently without external electricity. Blackouts aim to preserve these images in fossilized form, conducting the audience to reevaluate the automated photographic process through geological and thermodynamic lenses.
